Just Transition


The Gippsland Trades & Labour Council (GTLC) and RMIT University are working to build a future for Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley by identifying key challenges, exploring policy and developing practical approaches to sustainability and transition. Central to this is the development of a program to lay the grounds for a transition to a low carbon economy.

RESEARCH UPDATE

The National Centre of Sustainability (NCS) at Swinburne University recently received funding from the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) to conduct research into the current and future job and skill requirements for the Latrobe Valley power industry.

NCS is partnering with RMIT University’s Centre for Sustainable Organisations and Work to conduct the six month pilot project, which aims to assist local industry, unions and government in understanding the skills profile within the power industry and the future demand for these skills in a low carbon economy.

Skilling the Valley Project: GTLC Industry Link Officer

Skilling the Valley is a regional economic and workforce transition program funded by the State Government that will play a key role in supporting the region to transition to a low carbon economy.  Under the initiative four Industry Link Positions have been established in key organizations, including Gippsland Trades & Labour Council (GTLC), Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI), Latrobe City Council and Gippsland Education Precinct.  For more information email: stvproject@aussiebroadband.com.au or Tel: GTLC Industry Link Officer, Val Prokopiv on 03 5133 7684.

 

Gippsland Trades & Labour Council Workshops

Gippsland Trades and Labour Council Workshops are an ingegral part of the Just Transition process. Idustry sectors, including Energy, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Tourism and Forestry are being brought together in a series of workshops that will be a precursor to the Just Transition Skills, Regional Innovation and Opportunities Exhibition and Conference to be held over two days in November 2011.

 WAC: Against Bullying is addressing the issue of workplace bullying in two ways. Firstly by changing the culture of workplace bullying through a unique campaign and secondly documenting the extend of workplace bullying in Victoria.

Return to Work Project

Workable Solutions was a two year Return to Work Project undertaken by the Ballarat Regional Trades & Labour Council and the Gippsland Trades and Labour Council. The Project is now complete and a comprehensive report written.

The Gippsland Apprenticeship Research Project (GARP) arose from growing concern among a range of stakeholders (e.g. employers, trade unions, employment agencies, educators, group training providers, etc.) in the Gippsland region about apprentices/trainees and training schemes. The project reference group and funding sources included Monash University, Gippsland Local Government Network, Regional Development Victoria and Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN
.Stakeholder concerns included issues surrounding
* declining retention rates
* the quality of apprenticeships and traineeships
* employers’ motivation in taking on apprentices
* apprentice/trainee motivations for undertaking training.

Violence Against Women

In Australia, one in three women will be assaulted or abused in her lifetime. These women are our mothers, our girlfriends, our wives, our daughters, our colleagues and our friends. How have we allowed this to occur?
Not only is it unacceptable for this violence to take place, it is unacceptable that we allow certain behaviours and attitudes to go unchallenged.
Some of us experience violence first hand. Others hear stories of violence against women. Others observe it or look on from afar. The worst part? We remain silent.
If we are to move our society forward and prevent violence against women from occurring, we must speak out. We must take action to challenge attitudes and behaviours. We must not remain silent.


The White Ribbon Campaign is the only national violence prevention campaign, and it is unique in that it aims to raise awareness among Australian men and boys about the roles they can play to prevent violence against women. The campaign calls for men across Australia to speak out and take an oath. An oath swearing never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.


Gippsland Trades & Labour Council hosted an afternoon tea on White Ribbon Day and joined Secretary, John Parker in signing the oath on behalf of the Council.
